CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: III (Birth name: Michael Arclight)
Age: 15
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal
Canon Point: Episode 49/Immediately after his Duel against Yuma but before he returns home.
Character Information: Here! Note that the wiki prefers dub names over the original names and will refer to III as 'Trey'.
Personality: III is, by initial appearances, a very polite, sweet young man. He's introduced defusing an argument between his two older brothers, is visibly uncomfortable when he has to watch his father torture Haruto for his power, and in general is the nicest person of the Arclight family.
Of course, when the rest of the family consists of a revenge obsessed father, an emotionally distant eldest brother, and a second older brother who barely masks his sadism behind a veneer of kindness, it's not hard to come off as the nicest.
III is shown to be willing to follow through on his father's revenge schemes, as shown when he goes out of his way to trick Ryoga into taking the Number Card 'Shark Drake' on the request of his father, despite knowing that the Numbers like to take control of those who hold them, and was in fact surprised when Ryoga managed to resist Shark Drake's influence. He also admits to only Dueling on the power of hatred towards Dr. Faker and is shown to be perfectly aware of his brother IV's sadistic tendencies, but does very little to intervene, instead just standing by and watching as IV beat the crap out of two of Yuma's friends in a curbstomp of a Duel. (And the one time he did object to anything IV did, it was because IV was tormenting Kaito with footage of Haruto being tortured.)
III is shown to be a skilled Duelist in his own right, apparently having managed to gather all the Heart Pieces he needed to advance in the World Duel Carnival within the first day of the tournament while offscreen. He's also shown to be quick to cooperate and help his partner in Tag Duels, often providing support and protection for his Duel partner or assisting in locking down the opponent's monsters, as shown when he teams up with IV to duel Kaito and Yuma. In fact, he seems to have a certain level of competitiveness within him, choosing to continue Dueling and trying to beat Ryoga after getting him to take Shark Drake, despite having been told earlier that he could just throw the Duel after accomplishing the primary goal.
He also has a surprisingly sharp mouth on him, demonstrating a willingness to be, well, kind of a little shit to his opponents. Prime examples of this include telling IV there was no need for him to duel Ryoga due to him not having any Numbers to take (knowing full well about the grudge between IV and Ryoga) and then casually revealing that he'd guaranteed his own spot in the World Duel Carnival finals to Ryoga, promising to see him there. He often does this while maintaining both his smile and his politeness, creating an effect of smug confidence.
III is intensely loyal to and protective of the people he cares about, with the focus of this loyalty/protectiveness pointed at his family. This goes hand in hand with his ultimate desire to see his incredibly broken family go back to how they used to be, and in fact this desire and the protectiveness mingled in an outright disastrous way when he broke down out of sheer envy after meeting Yuma's much healthier family and decided to devote himself more closely to Tron's revenge scheme in hopes they would return to normal after it was done, starting with Dueling Yuma to get him out of the way. His desperation to see this through in turn led him to willingly borrow power from Tron for the Duel, followed by him revealing that he has the capacity to let his rage get the better of him and act all too much like his father in all the worst ways when pushed hard enough, ranging from using his monsters as nothing more than expendable pawns in his strategy, to trying to mentally break Yuma and refusing to let him surrender, to flat out killing Astral using his borrowed powers. It's only realizing that a card he played is trying to punch a hole in reality to open a portal to the Barian World that brings III out of his desperation fueled rage and allows him to help Yuma revive Astral so they could stop the effect, at the cost of III ultimately losing the Duel.
Of course, there's more to III under all the willingness to run with his family's drama and his surprising levels of viciousness. He is legitimately the nicest person in his family, a trait even directly acknowledged by Tron. As stated above, his ultimate wish is just to see his family go back to how they used to be, he's generally polite to others when not acting on Tron's orders and not being smug to his opponents, seeing Yuma's happy family utterly breaks him out of envy, and after his Duel against Yuma he entrusts him with saving his broken family, having placed his trust in Yuma's ability to never give up. As also stated above, he's incredibly protective and loyal to a fault of those he cares about, often providing backup to his allies during Tag Duels. He frequently takes this protectiveness and loyalty to self sacrificial levels, such as by redirecting opponent's attacks to strike him instead of his tag partner in Tag Duels, when he voluntarily accepted power from Tron for the sake of Dueling Yuma despite being warned of the massive toll it would take on him, and when he attempted to force a tie while Dueling Yuma in a last ditch effort to protect his family, even though said tie would take him out as well.
He's a lot like his father in more innocent ways too, having picked up an interest in ancient artifacts and civilizations (with a dash of Ancient Aliens style beliefs about 'out of place artifacts' mixed in) off of Tron's previous work researching other dimensions. This interest provides the basis for his Chronomaly deck (a deck archetype based around out of place artifacts and Ancient Aliens/Atlantis/ley line style conspiracies), and can become outright distracting for him, as seen when he broke into Yuma's house only to end up sidetracked by the amount of ancient artifacts in the attic, later excitedly infodumping about them to Yuma when he showed up to intercept III.
He also picks up quite a bit of curiosity towards Yuma after seeing how determined he is and how he doesn't fight using the power of hatred, at one point breaking into his house in an attempt to investigate him. III generally seems to regret his family's absolute worst actions such as the Haruto torture incident, outright apologizing to Yuma for his part in what happened, but he willingly chooses to follow along with and enable their schemes anyways and doesn't really attempt to intervene or get them to stop, making him just as complicit.
After all, III is at the end of the day an Arclight, and none of the Arclights escaped being messed up by the family drama, not even the nicest of the lot.
